i will delight in your commandments

As a congregation, I want us to love God’s law. I want us to see it as beautiful and life-giving. Our current Sunday worship emphasis on the Ten Commandments is aimed in this direction.

A couple of weeks ago, Ben & Jess introduced a new antiphon to help shape us in this way. The text is taken from Psalm 119 and reads:

I will delight in your commandments, which I love.

My hands I lift to your commandments, which I love.

This song wonderfully summarizes who we want to become. We want to become people who not merely “follow the rules”. We want to become people who love and delight in God’s law.

This is gospel obedience. To obey not because we are struggling to be set free, but because God has already set us free.

So, when we are singing this antiphon, we are singing our future. We’re singing about the kind of people God is making us to be. That is worth singing about.
